Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

If you choose B.Sc. Economics (Hons), your learning is more quantitative and analytical. You’ll work extensively with mathematical models, statistics, and econometrics, making it ideal if you enjoy working with data, analytics, finance, or technical roles. An M.A. in Economics, on the other hand, generally focuses more on qualitative social theory, development studies, and public policy perspectives. If you see yourself in data-heavy, finance, analytics, or research-driven careers, the B.Sc. track gives you that strong quantitative foundation from the start.

Under NEP 2020, you have flexibility. You can complete a 3-year Honours degree, or choose to stay for the 4th year (Honours with Research). If you opt for the research track, your final year includes advanced research methodology and a supervised dissertation. This strengthens your academic profile and allows you to apply directly to Ph.D. programmes without needing a separate Master’s degree in some cases. If you are considering research, academia, or international higher studies, the 4-year research option gives you a clear academic advantage.

Yes. Mathematics at the 10+2 level is generally required. This is because the programme includes calculus, statistics, and econometrics, all of which require comfort with numbers and analytical thinking. If you enjoy logical reasoning, data interpretation, and structured problem-solving, Mathematics will become one of your strongest tools in this course.

A B.Sc. (Hons/Research) in Economics opens pathways in both the corporate and public sectors. You can explore roles such as: • Financial Analyst • Data Scientist • Investment Banker • Policy Analyst The programme also builds a strong foundation if you plan to prepare for competitive examinations like Indian Economic Services (IES), RBI Grade B, or civil services. If you choose the research track, it also prepares you for postgraduate studies, advanced research, and international academic opportunities.

Starting salaries vary depending on the role and your skill level. In 2026, entry-level salaries typically range between ₹8 LPA to ₹15 LPA, especially in analytics, finance, and consulting roles. Students who specialise in quantitative finance, business analytics, or high-demand data roles may secure packages exceeding ₹20 LPA, depending on performance and placement opportunities. Your earning potential grows significantly as you build experience and advanced skills.

As part of your quantitative training, you will typically work with tools used widely in economics and analytics, such as: • R and Python are used for data analysis. • STATA is used for econometric modelling. • SQL is used for database management. • Visualisation tools like Tableau or Power BI are used. These tools strengthen your analytical profile and make you industry-ready in data-driven roles.

Yes. If you complete the 4-year Honours with Research degree, you meet the 16-year education requirement commonly required for Master’s and Ph.D. programmes in countries like the USA and UK. This means your academic structure aligns well with global higher education systems, making international progression smoother and more straightforward.
