Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
An LLM (Master of Laws) is a postgraduate law degree that you pursue after completing your LLB. It allows you to specialise in a particular area of law and build advanced legal knowledge beyond foundational studies. If you’re looking to strengthen your expertise, move into specialised practice, research, or academia, an LLM helps you take that next step.
The duration of an LLM programme depends on the university's structure. Many institutions offer a one-year full-time programme, while some follow a two-year format divided into semesters. The structure may vary based on specialisation and regulatory guidelines.
To apply for an LLM, you must hold either a 3-year LLB or a 5-year integrated LLB degree from a recognised university. Institutions may also specify a minimum aggregate percentage as part of their admission requirements.
An LLM gives you the opportunity to focus on a specific legal domain. Common specialisations include Corporate Law, Criminal Law, International Law, Intellectual Property Law, Cyber Law, Human Rights Law, and other emerging legal fields. Choosing a specialisation allows you to build deeper subject expertise and stand out professionally.
Your coursework will typically include advanced legal research methodology, core and elective subjects aligned with your chosen specialisation, and a dissertation or research project. You will engage in critical analysis, case law interpretation, and applied research to strengthen both academic and practical legal skills.
With an LLM, you can pursue specialised roles such as legal advisor, corporate counsel, policy analyst, academician, researcher, or subject-matter expert in your chosen field. The degree enhances your professional credibility and opens doors to higher-level opportunities in both public and private sectors.
Yes. An LLM provides a strong foundation if you wish to pursue a PhD in Law or related interdisciplinary research areas. It prepares you for advanced academic, policy-making, and research-oriented careers by strengthening your analytical and investigative skills.
